Voles and bumblebees meet in wildlife photography contest

Tuesday, 31 August 2010 19:25

Voles, bumblebees and deer have met in a competition held to find the best wildlife photograph, ethical insurance customers may have noted.

The Suffolk Wildlife Trust held a contest to find the most striking snap of 2010, with hundreds of entries pouring in.

The eventual winner was Cameron Smith of Wetheringsett, whose amateur image portrayed a bee hovering inches away from a purple flower.

"It took me a lot of attempts before I got the picture I wanted to get. I chose this photo because the bee was in flight and the photo was sharp - it looked cool," the 13-year-old explained.

Runners-up in the competition included Matt Fiddler's shot of a soaking wet water vole bristling its fur and staring at the camera with wide eyes, the Daily Mail shows.

Known to be semi-aquatic mammals, the water vole was made famous by the Ratty character in Kenneth Grahame's The Wind in the Willows.

Mr Fiddler also scooped the prize for Best Anglican Landscape, with a snap of the sunrise over the River Stour.
