Cartoon canines could be the perfect first pet dog

We were all children once - and for those pet insurance policyholders who are also parents, it might be the perfect pooch to let in to play with your kids: the cartoon canine.

Although there are plenty of loveable animated characters to choose from, a blogger at DreamDogs has compiled a list of the top five.

Number one, of course, is Scooby Doo, the title character of the famous super sleuth cartoon which has since been turned into a film starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, Matthew Lillard and Freddie Prinze Junior.

There's also Muttley, the evil sidekick of Dick Dastardly on grand prix extraordinaire extravaganza Wacky Races, as well as a pooch for the grown-ups in the form of martini-sipping, sarcastic hound Brian on Family Guy.

But of course don't forget about the other famous pooches, such as perhaps one of the most beloved of all: Mickey Mouse's furry friend, Pluto.
