US residents reminded to include pets in evacuation plans

Thursday, 2 September 2010 13:12

Pet health care usually involves a trip to the vet's or a vaccine here and there - but for certain residents of the US, it also requires an evacuation plan.

Being prepared for natural disaster is something many people living in some areas of the country must keep in mind and the Humane Society of the United States recently reminded them to include animals in these aims.

Some 358 million pets live in almost two-thirds of American households, the organisation stated, warning owners to always take them if forced to evacuate.

This may be the case for those in the path of Category 4 Hurricane Earl, whose winds have reached nearly 145 mph, the country's weather centre confirmed.

It is likely hoped that no pets are left to fend for themselves due to the extreme conditions, such as they were when Hurricane Katrina hit five years ago.

According to statistics cited by the Associated Press, some 600,000 animals died or lost their shelters as a result of the incident.
