Dog rescue from Hurricane Katrina leads to successful pet adoption

Cat and dog rescue after Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans five years ago was a difficult and lengthy task - but one man has explained how it led to many successful pet adoption cases.
Speaking to Oregon news service KATU.com, Seattle-based Steve Siadek revealed how he and a group of animal lovers attempted to save as many furry friends as they could from the wrecked city.
"We'd drive down the streets honking and you'd start hearing barking," he added.
"You get them out and you get them fluids. And they wag their tails ... you knew from that point it was the right thing to do."
Overall, Mr Siadek and his team rescued more than 1,000 lost pets, with the majority having since been taken in by loving families.
The Humane Society of the United States recently reminded US residents in the path of natural disasters to include their pet in an evacuation plan. The warning may be particularly timely, given the current force of Hurricane Earl which is headed for the country's eastern seaboard.
