Vet: Animal chastity belt not a good idea

Thursday, 4 February 2010 17:00

The new Pet Anti-Breeding System (PABS) - essentially a chastity belt for pet dogs and cats - is not an appropriate pet healthcare product for a number of reasons, a vet has said.

Dr Kathy Gervais told the San Francisco Gate that there were two main problems with this.

Firstly, "it's only as good as it is easy to put on properly" and she pointed out that user error is also why birth control in humans is not 100 per cent reliable.

Secondly, it may be underestimating the strength of a canine's will.

"I've known dogs to chew through garage doors and leap over fences to get to a female dog in heat," Dr Gervais pointed out.

Chief executive officer of PABS for Pets Dexter Blanch told the news source one of the main reasons people may be interested in this product was because some animals have medical issues such as blood coagulation abnormality that means spaying surgery is out of the question.

But the vet said animals are tested for this before surgery and it was very rare.

PABS also says the product is intended for breeders who want to control the cycles of their creatures.

Animal Friends Insurance, one of the largest independent pet insurers in the UK offer dog insurance, cat insurance and horse insurance to UK residents.
