Urinary tract infections 'leading cause of vet visits for cats'

Animal lovers who hold cat health insurance may have found that their feline friends suffer from urinary tract infections.
If so, they are not alone - a survey commissioned by California-based animal care provider Veterinary Pet Insurance has shown that this was the leading cause of veterinary visits for kitties in 2009.
Number two on the list of cat ailments was gastritis and vomiting, while chronic renal failure was in third place.
Dental disease and diabetes were other common reasons that your feline friend may have had to visit the vets last year.
As for your pet pooch, ear infections and skin allergies were the main two reasons as to why dogs found themselves in the vet's waiting room in 2009.
But canines found gastritis and vomiting to be almost as much as a problem as cats did, with this condition coming fourth on the list.
A recent study by Bristol University found that cat owners are often better educated than dog owners - although this does not mean that the pet's welfare suffers.
Animal Friends are a specialist pet insurance company providing dog insurance and cat insurance to British pet owners since 1999 and we now offer horse insurance too.
