Pet health care: Cats need a balanced diet

Monday, 15 February 2010 14:25

Cats and dogs often require similar pet health care attention - and a balanced diet is crucial, says one vet.

Writing for the Business Mirror, Keith de la Cruz discusses the different needs of felines, which are directly affected by what they eat.

Their teeth, bones, organs, bowels and coat will all be reflected in their diet, so ensuring the right type of food is paramount, he adds.

"A number of the cheap varieties are most likely to cause health problems in the long-run ... [cats] easily form urinary stones when the required food pH is not met," Dr de la Cruz recommends.

He also advises other things owners can do to make certain their kitty is in tip-top condition. These include regular grooming, claw examination and vaccinations, as well as the relevant booster shots.

The tips come days after the RSPCA announced it was currently taking care of a feline who had hitched a ride under a car bonnet earlier this year, yet emerged unscathed.

Animal Friends are a specialist pet insurance company providing dog insurance and cat insurance to British pet owners since 1999 and we now offer horse insurance too.
