Pet dogs and cats 'teach children life lessons'

Pet dogs and cats are a great way of teaching children responsibility, according to a writer in the Oakland Tribune.
Linda Treml Hallam believes that with spring around the corner it could be the perfect time to think about pet adoption.
Having a pet to care for gives children a sense of what it is like to have someone dependent on them.
According to Ms Hallam, caring for an animal helps bring home this serious life lesson for children.
Ms Hallam writes: "One also becomes aware that consideration of others is a part of life all life. When caring becomes love, it builds character that can last a lifetime."
However, Ms Hallam is keen to note that taking in a pet can be an enriching experience for the whole family and not just the children.
The website safekids.co.uk identifies small and low maintenance pets as the best pets for children seeking their first animal.
Animal Friends are a specialist pet insurance company providing dog insurance and cat insurance to British pet owners since 1999 and we now offer horse insurance too.
