Making a few changes to an animal's diet could help them live longer, pet health insurance policyholders may be interested to know.
K9 magazine published a series of advice columns on helping creatures reach a happy old age and nutrition was a central part of this.
It said variety was key just as it is for humans, so even though commercial foods have come a long way, raw and fresh products can "really invigorate a dog's diet".
A general rule to follow that could be surprising is that supplied pet food should be fit for human consumption and therefore should not contain any unwanted by-products or additives owners would be uncomfortable with eating.
The experts also revealed that putting garlic into a meal occasionally could improve heart condition and offer other benefits.
Another tip is to give animals Valerian Root, a natural remedy that can calm pets down.
This could be especially useful because much like people, pets are though to suffer the ill effects of stress and need a bit of relaxation to find balance.
Animal Friends Insurance, one of the largest independent pet insurers in the UK offer dog insurance, cat insurance and horse insurance to UK residents.
