Many breeds of dog that are considered dangerous and have a history of abuse and shelter care are at a disadvantage for being adopted - but one story proves why this can mean a missed opportunity.
The Seattle Pets blog highlighted the case of Emmett, who after being adopted from a shelter, has become an example of all the good canines can offer.
He became a Pet Partner with the Delta Society, an organisation that trains animals to offer some sort of service, usually in hospitals.
Naturally affectionate, Emmett volunteers with children and sick people - and has received praise for his skills.
"Although he's indiscriminate about his affection, he has this uncanny knack for identifying people who need extra attention, whether they're shy, upset or just having a bad day," the reporter explained.
In the UK, similar programmes exist such as Pets as Therapy. Owners who believe their furry friend has the personality and character to offer comfort to those in need of it can look into something like this to make sure their talents are not wasted.
Animal Friends Insurance, one of the largest independent pet insurers in the UK offer dog insurance, cat insurance and horse insurance to UK residents.
