Mary Rose dog to show at DFS Crufts

Thursday, 11 March 2010 11:36

The Mary Rose's pet dog will be on show at DFS Crufts this week.

The dog's rescue was part of a project that retrieved thousands of items from the wreckage of the Mary Rose that mysteriously sank in 1545.

The skeleton of the dog, which has been named Hatch after the part of the ship where her remains were found, was only recently reconstructed.

Hatch, who was thought to be a mongrel, was most likely on the Mary Rose as the ship's ratter, because seaman were superstitious about bringing cats on board.

John Lippiett, the chief executive of the Mary Rose Trust, said it was fitting to display Hatch at an event like DFS Crufts.

Mr Lippiett added: "We are delighted to bring Hatch, the world's oldest lost sea dog, to the world's premier dog show, so that visitors can meet an ancestor of their much loved pets."

DFS Crufts begins on Thursday March 11th and runs until Sunday 14th. It is held at the NEC in Birmingham and tickets can be booked in advance.
