The dog adoption process is familiar to Little Mama - a canine who was returned to a shelter four times before somebody decided she was theirs for keeps.
USA Today recently recounted the story of the red pit bull, which now helps youngsters learn about humane treatment, despite her troubled history.
Little Mama was homeless from a young age and nearly euthanised after being returned four times by owners who were moving, or decided that she was not suitable for their home.
However, Allison Lamond - one of the staff at the Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society where she was being kept - wanted to give her a chance, so took her in and soon realised it was a perfect match.
"She is one of the most amazing dogs I've ever met," said Ms Lamond, who now takes her to schools so people can learn more about animals.
Dog adoption can be a wonderful way to give a pet a new lease of life, but it is important to consider what breed will be most suitable for your household. Asking a professional for advice can be an ideal first step.
