Police dog training gets national nod

Monday, 8 March 2010 20:41

Techniques used in dog training by the North Wales Police have proven so successful they are to be taught to every police dog unit in England and Wales.

Welsh newspaper the Daily Post reports that the ten canines and their handlers in the force are the prime examples for the most effective dog training methods when it comes to teaching the pooches how to track scents.

Police Authority member Douglas Wynne, who is responsible for the animals, said the sector was proud of their "groundbreaking" success.

The newspaper adds that while most police forces use German shepherds, the North Wales force decided to use malinois shepherds - a decision which, although originally met with derision, has proven effective.

PC Phil Griffin said this particular breed is known for its social and non-aggressive skills.

The BBC has reported that four men have been arrested for drug offences in Cornwall after a sniffer dog alerted its handler to the presence of the illegal substances.
