Cats get nine lives saved at Utah shelter

Wednesday, 10 March 2010 20:12

A cat and dog rescue home in Utah has implemented a new policy which has resulted in many of their felines getting more than nine lives.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports that the Salt Lake county animal shelter managed to save an "unprecedented" 1,600 kitties last year - which is around double the number of those rescued the year before.

This has been done by varying the prices of adoption - cats older than kittens are now free to take home while some dogs are almost triple the price that they were.

However, canines are nearly always easier to rehome than adult felines - so the balance has tipped in their favour.

It is hoped that more cats moving out of the shelter will reduce the need for others to be euthanised if they do not find homes as there will be more room.

The Scottish SPCA has released a report stating that there were far more "shocking" attacks on animals in 2009 than in recent years.
