Woman charged after dog found "starved to death"

Thursday, 25 February 2010 18:20

A woman in Canada has been charged with wilfully causing unnecessary suffering to an animal after a pet dog was found "starved to death" at her home.

Evalina Perry, 26, of London, Ontario, faces two counts of the offence.

Police say the canine was found on February 10th in a back yard, while another, which was said to be dehydrated and low in weight, was discovered inside the house.

The second animal has been seized by the London Humane Society.

"It's very disappointing to see this happen," organisation executive director Judy Foster told the QMI news agency.

"There's no reason for any pet to starve in this city ... it's a deplorable situation."

Earlier this week, an animal welfare case that had attracted media attention in the UK reached its conclusion.

Police dog handler PC Mark Johnson was found guilty of causing unnecessary suffering to two dogs in his care.

The 39-year-old based at Nottingham police station was ordered to pay £2,500 and given a six-month conditional discharge.
