Desirable' breed of dog abandoned

Thursday, 11 March 2010 20:45

The Scottish SPCA is caring for a pedigree St Bernard who was found tied up to a tree in Glenrothes.

Senior inspector Steven Gray said it is unusual to find such an "expensive and desirable" breed of dog dumped by its owners.

It is estimated the tan and white female, who is now being cared for at Langdykes Kennels, is between three and four years old.

A member of the public found her on Ettrick Way on Sunday evening (March 7th) and the SPCA is appealing for information about her abandonment.

Mr Gray suggested the St Bernard had not received the best pet health care as she is not in a great condition and is underweight for her size.

He added: "Whoever did this should know that it is an offence to abandon an animal and this is something we take very seriously."

The Scottish SPCA has experienced a dramatic increase in the pressure on its services in recent years, according to chief superintendent Mike Flynn.

He noted the dogs and other animals in its care, as well as court cases and calls to its helpline, have all increased in number and that it needs public support to continue its work.
