Thinking of Showing your Pet Cat...?

Showing your cat can be a very enjoyable and rewarding experience. Pedigree cat breeders are always striving to produce cats that are the finest of their chosen breed, but you don't necessarily have to have a pure bred pedigree cat to be elegible to take part in a cat show. You can find cat shows all over the world. Each show has their own rules and regulations on how the show is organised. The Governing Council of the Cat Fancy (GCCF) is responsible for the show rules in the UK.
If you want to enter your cat in a cat show you will have to make plenty of preparations in advance, including making sure your cat is healthy and is up to date with all of their vaccinations. You will have to send in an entry form with entry fees several weeks before a show. You will also want to make sure your cat is used to being handled and being confined in a pen.
Cat Shows usually have four main classes, which include kitten, neuter, open and household pet classes. Any cat can be shown if it is at least 14 weeks old. The kitten class is for cats under 10 months of age. The neuter class is judged according to the same breed standards as regular cats. The open class is for all breeds that are represented at the cat show. The household pet class is for neutered cats that have unregistered parentage or unknown parentage. This group has fewer minimum standards and the cats are judged by their uniqueness.
Your cat will be thoroughly examined by a judge and then the judge will write a report. After all the nominations have been recorded, the top nominated cats will be brought up to the panel of judges. They then vote for the cat of their choice. The judges then write the number of the chosen cat on a board and hold it up for the spectators to see. The cat that has the most votes wins the title of Best in Show in their class.
Even if your cat doesn't win, this is a fun and enjoyable experience that you can enjoy with your feline companion, as well as meeting cat lovers from near and far who share your passion for the feline form.
