St. Bernard
The St. Bernard is a sweet and friendly breed of dog that has a steady disposition. Even though they are powerful they are very mellow and laid back dogs. They love to play; especially in snow or tall grass. They are excellent with children and are very loyal. The St. Bernard is protective of its family and makes a good watchdog.
They are easy to train, but they can be a little stubborn at times. St. Bernards are eager to please and should be socialized at a young age to help manage their large size. If you decide to bring a St Bernard into your home you have to be prepared for their size. They need plenty of room and they also tend to drool and snore.
St. Bernards are sensitive to heat and need a mild climate and room to breathe. They need daily brushing as they tend to shed. They do however thrive in cold climate due to their thick coats.
This breed was named after Saint Bernard de Menthon which was the patron saint to skiers and mountaineers. They are an old breed and were first developed in 100 AD by Swiss Monks who ran a rescue center in the Alps. Their heritage is not exactly known but is thought to be derived from a combination of Tibetan Mastiffs, New Foundlands and other large breed dogs. Since they have an excellent sense of smell and direction they were used for finding and rescuing people stranded in the mountains.
They are powerful, tall and muscular dogs and have square, well proportioned heads with wrinkled foreheads. They have short muzzles, jowls, and black noses. Their ears hang down close to their face. They have thick necks, broad shoulders and strong legs. The St. Bernard has a long, heavy tail and a dense coat of hair and can be short or long. They are usually white with red, mahogany, brindle, tan or black markings. These huge lovable dogs make great family pets if you have the space for them.
