Policy inception periods
When first taking out pet insurance, you may notice there is something called an ‘inception period’, after which your policy starts properly. You may be wondering exactly why cover doesn’t start immediately, so Animal Friends is giving you the facts to understand your insurance.
This inception period is not simply for the insurance company’s benefit, as they do not suspect that every customer may be out to swindle and scam. This period also allows you, the policy holder, to check over your documentation and amend the policy if needed; perhaps, after reading the documents, you want to change to a higher level policy in order to get a larger amount of cover for accidents and illness, or maybe change to a lifetime rather than non-lifetime cover.
This waiting period can be seen positively; if you are changing from one insurance company to another, you need not worry about periods with no insurance – you can overlap your old policy with the new one, meaning you will be covered for the entirety of the change-over. When overlapping your policies like this, you can cancel the new policy if something should happen during the change-over period in order to stay with the old policy in order to claim. With Animal Friends pet insurance, public liability is covered immediately and accidents are covered after five days, with illnesses covered after the full 14 days, so you don’t need to worry about those unfortunate accidents that happen at the worst of times.
As you can see, this inception period greatly benefits you as the customer whilst allowing the insurance company a level of protection.
