Winter safety tips issued to owners of pet dogs

With winter approaching, one expert has advised owners of pet dogs to make sure their animals stay safe in the colder months.

Kate Morton of the Humane Society of Parkersburg has urged people to keep two key things in mind - heat and hydration - when looking after their four-legged friends in cooler temperatures, WTAP News reports.

"In the winter time animals do consume more water to keep their body temperature regulated," she explained, adding those who sometimes keep their dogs outdoors should consider making some alterations to the shelter their pooches use.

Ms Morton advised owners to not use blankets to line the animal boxes, stating the "best case scenario" is to get hold of some straw.

"It better insulates body heat and keeps your dog warm," the specialist commented.

Felicity King-Evans of moneysupermarket.com recently noted having pet insurance is even more important during the winter due to the health risks associated with the colder weather.
