Ethical insurance customers may be interested in tips on grooming animals to save money.

The Guardian's DIY column calculated that by learning this skill, owners could save up to £130 a year.

It was suggested that there should be a dedicated grooming area so the pooch knows that this is not play time.

Tools include brushes, clippers, shampoo and conditioner, a towel and a nail file.

Also, talcum powder can be used on the hind quarters to facilitate the removal of dried excrement.

It was noted that clipping nails may not be necessary if the dog is frequently exercised on hard pavement but if it is, great care must be taken not to clip too far. With white nails, it is possible to see the flesh in the centre of the nail.

As for cutting, specific instructions according to fur type are available via the Dog Breeders Association.

Clippers should be touched regularly to make sure they are not overheating and a second pair of hands can be useful in this stage.

Alicia Bodine wrote for eHow.com that it was especially important to trim hair on paws but that this should be done with a small pair of scissors and a comb.

She said it was important to clean out between the toes and get rid of any matting in this area.
