New cat 'may improve relationship with other pets'

If you own a cat who is not adjusting well to your household, you may consider pet adoption to be one of your better options.

This is the recommendation of pet health care professional Jacque Newman, giving advice to animal lovers on Inside Toronto.

Answering one reader's question about a feline who has become distressed and unsettled by home renovations, he suggests being quiet and patient with the nervous animal.

But, if this fails, adding another kitty to your residence could be a good solution, "preferably a youngster who is inquisitive, outgoing and sociable".

This, Mr Newman explains, may persuade the other animal to grow more accustomed to his surroundings as he investigates the more confident addition.

However, if you choose to do this, it may be a good idea to keep the new arrival isolated for about a week - with its own water, food and litter tray - to enable other furry residents to become used to it in their own time.

According to vet Reena Shah, writing for North Jersey, doing so will help establish a pecking order in your hairy household.

Animal Friends are a specialist pet insurance company providing dog insurance and cat insurance to British pet owners since 1999 and we now offer horse insurance too.
