How to maximise the benefit of your pet health care

Maximising the benefits of pet health care services can be done using some simple tips, says resident expert for the Telegraph Pete Wedderburn.

He recently gave some advice to those who want to make sure communication with their vet is as clear as possible.

Pick an appointment time in the early morning or mid-evening, as this is when clinics tend to be quietest.

Have a list of questions ready for the vet and always warn ahead of time if you are bringing more than one animal with you.

If possible, avoid bringing the children, as they can distract you - but be honest with the vet and feel free to admit if you do not understand something they are saying.

Mr Wedderburn adds: "Most vets are quite happy to rephrase information or even use another approach – such as diagrams or models – to explain complicated or technical information."

Clinics often sell various pet health care products and, if you plan to purchase any, make sure you ask one of the resident nurses for help.

Animal Friends are a specialist pet insurance company providing dog insurance and cat insurance to British pet owners since 1999 and we now offer horse insurance too.
