Cleaning the carpets? Keep pets out

Those who are having their carpets cleaned have been advised to keep pets away from the area.

In response to a reader query, the San Francisco Chronicle said it is usually a good idea to make sure animals steer clear of the process, because they can sometimes be sensitive to the chemicals used by professionals.

However, a discussion with the vet can help owners figure out the option most suitable for their furry friends.

"Just like people, sensitivity to chemicals differs among pets," the newspaper said, recommending that animals be monitored after the cleaning process in case any adverse reactions occur.

"Contact your veterinarian if you notice any skin irritation, gastrointestinal problems or other abnormalities," it added.

Cleaning companies should also be researched ahead of time, as they can provide information about their products on request.

And of course, those who think something else in their home is jeopardising pet health care should visit a vet immediately.

Animal Friends are a specialist pet insurance company providing dog insurance and cat insurance to British pet owners since 1999 and we now offer horse insurance too.
