Can cats and rabbits co-exist peacefully?

Cat insurance policyholders who are thinking about adding a rabbit to their household should not be too concerned about whether the animals will get on.

A recent reader query in the Pioneer Press asked whether the two species can peacefully co-habit - and the answer, said Red Door Animal Shelter director Marcia Froelke Coburn, is yes.

Cats are more likely to wonder what the rabbits are than threaten them.

Adult supervision is a good idea for the first few months, but overall the felines will probably be respectful of the bunnies.

When they initially meet, keep the rabbits in their hutch and bring the cats into the same room. Offer them a titbit, so that they begin to identify the rabbits as something positive.

Anyone with concerns about owning different types of animals, however, may want to ask a vet or another professional for advice before bringing any new members of the family home.
