Blue Cross suggests keeping animals inside over the weekend

Animal welfare organisation the Blue Cross has warned owners to make a concerted effort to keep their furry friends indoors tonight and over the weekend.
As today is November 5th - Bonfire Night, which is when the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1905 is celebrated, as well as the start of Diwali, the annual Hindu festival - there is sure to be plenty of fireworks going off.
While these may be beautiful to adults who can understand the reasoning behind them, pet dogs and cats are likely to be terrified, the charity pointed out.
"We've seen pets who have been so scared they have injured themselves trying to get away or hidden in dangerous places. Some have even been killed after bolting from the house in front of a passing car," chief vet of the Merton animal hospital Caroline Reay added.
Meanwhile, Dogs Trust recently suggested playing a CD of firework noises ahead of time to slowly warm animals up to the sounds, then gradually increasing the volume as they grow more comfortable.
Animal Friends are a specialist pet insurance company providing dog insurance and cat insurance to British pet owners since 1999 and we now offer horse insurance too.
