Persian cats come from Persia, which is now known as Iran. The Persian cat is one of the most popular breeds in the world along with being one of the oldest.

The Persian cat was introduced into Europe by the Phoenicians and Romans in the 1500's and were highly valued items of trade. They were imported into Italy in 1620 and also into France around the same time. The Persian cat was first registered with the Cat Fanciers Association in 1871 and by the 1900's these beautiful exotic cats were being exported to the United States.

The common characteristics of the Persian cat include; long soft hair, large and very expressive eyes and chubby cheeks. They have a high nose and a wide round head and have a flat-faced look to them. Persians are popularly bred to take part in cat shows , and show quality Persians have a very long thick coat and short legs.

This breed of cat has watery eyes and their eyes should be cleaned at least once a day. It is not unusual for Persians to develop respiratory conditions that can affect their sinuses and breathing. Persian cats have a long thick coat that they can't keep clean themselves and require daily grooming . They also need to have baths regularly and be dried thoroughly.

The distinctive, fluffy Persian cat makes a good family pet as they usually have a very sweet and gentle personality. They adapt easily to their environment and are very affectionate. Persian cats are very responsive and communicate using their large expressive eyes. They are beautiful cats and will be a faithful and loving companion for a lifetime.
