Living with an Energetic Dog
Yes, living with a highly energetic dog whose only goal in life is to enthusiastically work to get our attention can indeed be quite a challenge. If you have an energetic dog or puppy you probably realise by now that taming the little beast is not so easy. However, with a lot of patience and a little bit of your time, you can have a well behaved dog.
Exercise is vital for an energetic dog; they require much more attention and exercise time. This may seem like a simple solution, however, sometimes our schedules are very full. You can begin each day by walking your dog every morning for at least an hour. The longer you walk them the better. It will help them let off some of their kinetic energy before you have to leave them to go about your day.
You should always have your dog on a lead so you are in control of the pace and where you are walking to. You should never yank or pull the lead hard to get their attention; this could cause an injury to their neck. When your dog is walking nicely beside you, make sure you give them praise and encouraging words.
While you are training your dog, if possible, take them with you where ever you go. In the beginning the smells and sounds might be too much for them so gradually start them out. The more they are around others and are praised for good behaviour the faster they will settle down, so start them off gradually.
It is also wise to invest in high quality dog toys to keep him entertained. The types of toys that you stuff or fill with treats are ideal for an energetic dog. These types of toys can be used to entertain your dog when you are unable to play or walk him. These dog toys are designed to keep your dog interested and to stimulate them mentally.
An over-energetic dog may be bothersome at times, but with patience and training they will fast become a beloved member of your family, and will help to keep you fit too!
