General Cat Chat Blog about Pet Animals

Cats are interesting creatures and have been around for millenia. Cats belong to the family which is called Felidea and can be traced back to ancient times. All cats no matter the breed or type share some of the same characteristics that are unique to the cat family.

Most cats are around 20 to 25 centimetres tall and weigh between 2.7 and 7 kilograms. There are some cats that weigh more than 9 kilograms. Cats are natural hunters and even domesticated cats have strong predatory instincts. They are the perfect hunting animal with their long sharp teeth, powerful jaws and retracting claws.

A cat's hearing is very acute and is actually more sensitive than a dog's hearing. They also have excellent eyesight that is made to be adaptable for dim vision. That is why you will see most cats doing the majority of their hunting after dusk and before dawn. A cat can move with great speed and ease because their muscles are long, thin and flexible. A cat can run up to speeds of 48 kilometres per hour.

Cats have a different walk than most other animals do. They walk by moving the front and back legs on one side at the same time and then on the other side. This gives the impression that a cat is gliding along when walking.

You can tell a cat's mood by looking into their eyes. An excited or frightened cat will have large pupils and an angry cat with have narrowed pupils. Cats are meat eaters and require a lot of protein and meat in their diet. Usually a cat will turn up its nose at fruit and vegetables. As with all household pets, they need a well balanced diet to keep them healthy.

Cats like to sleep during the day and hunt at night. A cat will make a good and loyal companion. They are easy to take care of and will be loyal for a lifetime.

If you are considering getting a pet cat, you should consider first whether a cat is the right pet for you or if you would be more suited to a less independent animal like a chinchilla or a guinea pig. Whatever type of pet you choose, it's always a good idea to compare pet insurance in order to ensure you are getting the best possible deal for you and your new companion.
