For fans of social media networking, Dogbook may be a good way to show off a pooch and keep in touch with other animal lovers.
ABC news examined this phenomenon and interviewed user Cynthia Frank on her reasons for signing up.
She explained that when she separated with her husband, he got their pooch Scout and it "left a big hole" in her life.
Connecting on Dogbook helped her feelings of loss somewhat.
"The fun part is that I can send little message to Scout," Ms Frank commented, adding: "It makes me feel like I'm more connected."
Owners can also give their creatures virtual hugs and scratches behind the ear - and she has found some old friends through the site who have been re-united through their mutual love of animals.
The Daily Mail reported on how the trend is faring in the UK and noted its users number into the tens of thousands.
Animal Friends Insurance, one of the largest independent pet insurers in the UK offer dog insurance, cat insurance and horse insurance to UK residents.
