Top dog crowned by animal welfare groups

Lions may be king of the jungle, but when it comes to Westminster, Charlie is top dog.

This is according to the results of a contest organised by Dogs Trust and the Kennel Club, which seeks to find the pooch that all politicians agree on.

Five-year-old border terrier Charlie, belonging to Conservative MP Helen Grant of Maidstone and the Weald, will celebrate with a "juicy bone".

Ms Grant added that she is pleased to be a "responsible dog owner".

Clarissa Baldwin of Dogs Trust noted that the bond between owner and pooch is the biggest factor in a canine's victory, remarking: "Charlie is this year's victor because the judges could clearly see the mutual love and respect between him and Helen".

The Labour MP for Livingston, Graeme Morrice, recently paid a political visit of his own, joining staff at Dogs Trust West Calder to get educated about animal welfare issues that affect his constituency.

Animal Friends Insurance, one of the largest independent pet insurers in the UK offer dog insurance, cat insurance and horse insurance to UK residents.
