There are some foods that we eat that can be harmful if eaten by your dog. This is because they have a different metabolism to us. Depending on the food it may cause only mild digestive problems; however some foods could cause severe illness

Some foods that shouldn't be given to your dog include chocolate, coffee or tea or anything else with caffeine. These products contain caffeine, theobromine or theophylline and can be toxic and affect the heart and nervous system. Grapes and raisins contain an unknown toxin which can cause damage to the kidneys. Macadamia nuts also contain an unknown toxin which can cause problems to your dog's digestive and nervous system. Onion and garlic have sulfoxides and disulfides which can damage red blood cells and cause anemia.

We all like to give our dogs table scraps now and then as an extra treat. This is fine but it's important that a dog has food especially for him. Table scraps are not nutritionally balanced and they should never be more than 10% of your dog's diet. Raw eggs and meat are other things to avoid giving your dog as they both can cause salmonella poisoning.

Dog food has nutrients and vitamins a dog needs to keep them healthy and strong. Whilst most dogs like cat food, it is generally too high in protein and fats for dogs so they shouldn't be eating this as a regular diet. You should also be careful with bones especially from fish or poultry because they can cause obstructions or lacerations of the digestive system.

You should try to avoid giving your dog sugary foods. They can lead to obesity, dental problems and possibly diabetes. Any pet lover likes to give their dog treats and of course, dogs love almost anything we give them. It's just good to be aware that some things are fine for humans, but can be hazardous to your dog. Just keep this in mind before you give them a piece of chocolate or a chicken bone, and watch out for any unusual symptoms which may indicate that you dog has been eating things which he shouldn't!
