Puppies join the police

Three puppies are due to start their dog training as members of the police force next year.

The Elcourtbay Springer Spaniels were born in January and will replace three drug dogs who will retire this year, reports the Northampton Chronicle.

Archie, Duke and Oscar will start their dog training when they are a year old.

Before they join the 15 dogs already in service, they will be cared for by puppy walkers until they can start their training.

Dog Section Sergeant Mark Anley told the paper the three puppies will become an "essential tool" in the force's fight against drugs once they have been trained.

"In the meantime they will spend their time with volunteers who will walk them and give them some basic training and socialise them ready for their official training," he added.

This training may include tactics developed by dog training experts of North Wales Police, whose successes have led to a change in the rulebook for police dog handlers, reports the Daily Post.
