Expert says dog training for the lead begins at home

In order to ensure pet dogs are well-behaved on the lead, it may be necessary to use the apparatus more often.
This is the implication of advice given by dog training expert Wendy DeCarlo in a piece for the Tribune Media Services.
She explained that pooches that are prone to jumping up at passersby while on a walk need to be properly taught the rules when under their master's guidance.
Putting an extra lead on the canine for more control could be a good idea, she said, as if a dog is fully restrained it will be unable to leap up at anybody.
However, training in this sense should always be done gently and carefully, as rough treatment can scare the animal and potentially injure it.
"Ask the people she encounters to withhold attention until she sits, no matter how cute she is ... it's the attention your dog craves," Ms DeCarlo added.
Using a lead might also be useful when at home in more extreme cases.
