Dangerous Dogs Act "kneejerk reaction"

The Dangerous Dogs Act has had a negative impact on pet health care, according to the Kennel Club.

The Kennel Club, who run the secretariat for the Dangerous Dogs Act Study Group (DDASG), believes that the 1991 Dangerous Dogs Act failed to put the right amount of emphasis on the welfare of pet dogs, because it was so hastily passed.

A new draft Dog Control Bill produced by the DDASG aims to place the responsibility for a dog's acts on its owners.

Caroline Kisko, the Kennel Club's communications director, indicated that the lack of success of the Dangerous Dogs Act derived from it being rushed through, without the correct consideration for animal welfare.

Ms Kisko said: "It has not reduced the number of pit bull terriers in this country, nor has it reduced the number of dog-biting attacks while it has had a huge impact on the welfare of many dogs."

On March 9th the government announced plans to tighten dog laws to help tackle the use of dangerous dogs by gangs as weapons or for intimidation.
