Considering a Rescued Animal
Recently, I visited a wonderful animal rescue centre a few miles away from where I live and was appalled to learn from their Founder that people are still under the misconception that there is usually something 'wrong' with a rescued animal. If those people could have seen how healthy and happy all her animals were, they would surely change their minds.
Why re-home a pet?
The reasons why an animal has to be re-homed are too long to list, but they can range from an owner dying or having to go into a care home, emigrating or a family member developing an allergy to the animal. All of them loved, looked after and cared for, just not able to live in their home anymore.
If an animal is rescued and offered for re-homing, they will normally have had a complete health check by a vet, given all appropriate vaccinations and microchipped. If an animal comes to them with any suspected illness or disease, they will be quarantined until they are 100% sure the animal is healthy. Why would they even consider having a potentially sick animal mixing with the perfectly healthy ones? It wouldn't make sense. They will also be able to tell you about the animal's disposition and temperament, e.g. whether they would be suitable for a house with children, if they would get on with other pets, or if they would be happier going to a quiet home.
These centres are set up and run by people who really care about animals. They devote so much time and energy to ensuring an animal is saved from being put down, not to mention the hours they spend raising funds. And remember, they will want to check up on you too! Much of their time is spent ensuring that any new owner has a suitable home and that they are placing the right animal with the right owner.
So please, if you or anyone you know is thinking of getting a pet, please find out what rescue centres you have nearby and give them a call. Most of them will have websites, so why not have a look at the animals they have available? Tell them about any uncertainties you may have about taking on a rescued animal - I'm sure they will be able to reassure you.
