Shelter witnesses 'end of cat crisis'

An animal welfare shelter is congratulating itself on a rise in feline adoptions.

According to the Glaswegian, Cats Protection's Glasgow adoption centre was struggling to cope with a stream of cats that had come through its door.

Many of the felines could not get rehomed thanks to a drop in interested parties - but after performing campaigns to raise awareness of the issue in the community, it has witnessed an improvement in its figures.

The average monthly adoption rate was 57 but after the drive to garner attention to the problem, this has increased to 95 - a 66 per cent increase.

Elaine Green, deputy manager at the adoption centre said: "We were having a really tough time but now we're getting a lot more people through the door ... I really hope the trend continues as there are plenty of cats out there that still need our help."

The UK has seen many charities and shelters complain about the current cat crisis, with the Scottish SPCA revealing that cases of feline cruelty have risen this year.
