Cat Breeds - The Devon Rex

We at Animal Friends Pet Insurance have looked at many different dog breeds, but now it's time to have a look at a rather unusual breed of cat, the Devon Rex.

The Devon Rex is a breed of cat which was found amongst a litter of kittens at Buckfastleigh, Devon in 1960, close to a disused tin mine.

The breed has a very distinctive face with large eyes and enormous ears and is sometimes referred to as 'pixie cats' or 'alien cats'. The most noticeable thing, however, about the breed is its unusual fur. The coats are wavy or rippled and can vary greatly in colour. Their coats are very short and have a suede-like feel to them. Some Devon Rex cats appear to have very little fur at all. The Devon Rex is similar to the Cornish Rex, but they are two distinct breeds.

Their bodies are very lean, but muscular and they also have long limbs.  They are famous for their playful nature and also their ability to climb.  They are incredibly affectionate and love company, so will often follow their owners around the house.  The Devon Rex is a highly intelligent breed and they can even be trained to fetch and jump and are happy to be walked on a lead.

On a personal note, I once looked after two Devon Rex's which belonged to a colleague of mine.  Although she had warned me of their playful nature, I was not prepared for their sheer athleticism!  They spent most of their time either climbing up the curtains and walls, or climbing down the outside wall from the balcony which was two floors up!  I also remember having to cook my supper with one of them wrapped around my neck, fast asleep.  They were great fun, very affectionate and loved to purr.
