The History of the Birman Breed
One version of the legend says that there was once a priest within a temple in Burma who owned a white cat. He was worshiping the blue eyed sun goddess one day when the temple was attacked and he was killed. The legend states that his cat jumped onto his chest facing the goddess and it changed its appearance. Its body turned to colours and feet were a brown color except for where they touched the chest of the priest which is said to represent the purity of his master's soul. Its eyes turned a bright blue and the other cats within the temple changed as well. The cat died a week later; carrying the priest's soul to heaven with him.
Of how the breed came to Europe, the following is told: A male and female cat were given to two men who helped the temple during an attack, while the male did not make it the female was pregnant and did. It is said that some out-breeding with other breeds was done in the beginning to strengthen the breed again.
