Cat Breed - the Birman

The Birman is a beautiful medium-long, silky-haired cat with a pale coloured body and darker points.  Their markings can be blue, chocolate, lilac, red, cream and pure seal. They have stunning bright blue eyes and are unusual as they have four pure white feet. Although their coat is quite long, they don't need very much grooming.

Birman's are believed to have originated in Burma. As the companion cat of the Kittah priests, Birman's were considered sacred and are often referred to as 'The sacred cat of Burma'. In 1919, a pair of Birman’s, one male and one female, were brought from Burma to France. Although the male cat did not survive, the pregnant female, Sita, did. From this one litter, the Birman became established in the western world and was recognised in England as a separate breed in 1965.

Birman's have a loving personality and are very sociable. They are playful and enjoy spending time with humans, showing great interest in everything their owners are doing. They adapt well to their circumstances, so they will comfortable with a large family, or with a single person.

Birman's are very well suited to an indoor lifestyle and, if allowed outside, will not wander very far and be content just lying in a sun-trap and certainly not posing much of a threat to the bird population in the area!
