Police in the USA have arrested a woman after she allegedly stabbed her boyfriend's pet dog in the head.

Rebecca L Spratt, 24, of Rutger Street in Utica, is accused of using a steak knife to injure the six-month-old bull terrier.

The incident is believed to have occurred during a domestic dispute on Wednesday morning (March 10th).

The puppy lost a significant amount of blood but its injuries are not life-threatening. It was taken to Burrstone Animal Hospital where it was being nursed back to health.

Police arrested Ms Spratt and charged her with misdemeanour criminal mischief for allegedly damaging property alongside animal cruelty charges.

Utica Deputy Police Chief John Toomey told the Utica Daily News: "What the motive was to injure the dog, I don’t know – whether it was retaliation against the owner or if she was mad at something the dog did."

The accused has been arraigned in Utica City Court and has since been moved to Oneida County Jail.

Last year a woman stabbed the bull terrier belonging to her ex boyfriend 23 times during an argument in Melbourne.

The pet dog survived the attack, the Herald Sun reported.
