A swan has been rescued by pet health care officials after being discovered on a river bank with a broken leg.

According to Midhurst and Petworth Today, the bird was stranded on the side of the water body.

Firefighters wearing safety equipment and dry suits and welfare officials made their way over to the swan and managed to coax it on to a rescue sled - a device designed specially for water-based missions, although it is also used in particularly muddy circumstances.

The swan is now in the care of the RSPCA.

It was recently reported by the organisation that it freed a swan trapped behind a water gate.

The swan's companion - as they are birds known to mate for life - was patiently waiting for her mate on the other side of the railings.

It was thought that they had been stuck there for several days waiting for rescue.
