Hillside Animal Sanctuary – July Charity of the Month

Monday, 15 August 2011 10:53

In June 2011 we here at Animal Friends started a ‘charity of the month’ competition. Four excellent charities are picked by us and then posted up on our ‘Feel Good Park’ page on Facebook where the public can vote for the charity they feel deserves the accolade. The charity that receives the most votes wins a £5,000 donation whilst second place wins £2,000 and third and fourth place each receives £1,500. Since June we have donated £20,000 between eight charities helping to promote our feel good ethos and keep us on track with our goal of donating a million pound to animal welfare charities by the end of 2012.

We are pleased to announce that the winner for the month of July is the Hillside animal sanctuary. It was founded and is run by Wendy Valentine, a name that goes hand-in-hand with care and love for horses. This is largely due to the great work that has been upheld by Wendy’s first animal welfare charity (Redwings Horse Sanctuary) since 1984. Established in 1995 and based in Norwich; the Hillside animal sanctuary homes over 1000 animals and is one of the U.K’s most successful campaigning organisations for animal rights. Since the inception of this commendable charity, it has particularly aided animals who have been routinely abused by the relentless and horrific factory farming industry. As well as housing and caring for animals rescued from this industry, Hillside also looks after over 300 horses, mules, donkeys and ponies.

Whilst providing this great shelter and comfort for animals, Hillside also actively run investigations into farms that are treating their animals cruelly. These investigations have been widely successful in exposing and prosecuting the people responsible for abhorrent disregard to farm animal’s lives.

The other charities that were up for the vote were ‘Farplace Animal Rescue’ who came second receiving a donation of £2,000; whilst ‘Gearing up for Gorillas’ came third and ‘Manchester & Cheshire Dogs’ home’ came fourth each receiving a donation of £1,500.

All the charities are glad to have received our donations and Farplace Animal Rescue had this message of thanks:

“Thank you for your amazing support of our rescue - so good to encounter an ethical company helping so many animal causes, In terms of what the donation has helped us achieve, we can now say yes to wildlife again and some other animals.  I had thought it would be September or later before we could but your donation means we can help more animals”

The four charities up for the vote this month (August) are ‘Birch Hill Dog Rescue’ (currently with 52 votes), ‘Wild Futures’ (currently with 58 votes), ‘German Shepherd Rescue Scotland’ (currently with 143 votes) and ‘Animals Asia’ (currently with 47 votes).  Have a read on their websites about all they do and then head to our Feel Good Park page to vote for the charity you feel deserves to win. Two of the charities are very small and so every single vote is important.
