Cat and dog rescue shelter 'overwhelmed'

A cat and dog rescue shelter has become overwhelmed by cases, reports the Tribune.

Welland and District Humane Society has begun to struggle due to an influx of cases and a lack of pet adoptions to balance the increased workload.

Ted Bettle, the shelter manager, told the paper that they had seen a 10 to 15 per cent rise in the number of animals coming to the shelter during the first two months of 2010.

Mr Bettle did acknowledge that the shelter had overseen a good number of adoptions, but that with the rising intake it just was not enough.

However, Mr Bettle recognised that abandoned pets are not always the fault of the owner as financial constraints can often play a part.

Mr Bettle said: "We had to go pick up a dog left tied to a chair in a laundromat. Someone cared enough to keep the dog warm but apparently could not support it since it wasn't claimed at the shelter."

Recently, Sally Smith of Planned Pethood had warned animal lovers not to assume that all stray kittens were abandoned.
